The hills of
Buttrio protect the Estate from the cold North-East
winds, maintaining a mild, ventilated micro-climate
that aids the cultivation of the indigenous grapes
of the Colli Orientali del Friuli, such as Ribolla
Gialla, Schioppettino,
Verduzzo Friulano,
Tocai Friulano,
Malvasia Istriana,
Refosco dal peduncolo rosso
and the famous Picolit.
It has also allowed imported grape varieties such
as Sauvignon, Pinot
Grigio, Chardonnay,
Merlot, Cabernet
Franc and Sauvignon
and Pinot Nero to
acclimatise. Although these grape varieties do not
originate in Friuli they have been grown here for
centuries, with excellent results.
As well as the unparalleled terrain, another feature
of the Estate that should be underlined is that 70%
of our vines come from local biotypes, i.e. from vines
directly selected in our vineyards that have adapted
best to our hills in terms of their reliability and
the quality of their production.
This allows us to have vines that are perfectly acclimatised
and produce truly typical wines, but also requires
such a great degree of knowledge and experience that
the planning and creation of our vineyard takes far
longer than normal.
However, this is a choice in which we firmly believe.
On one hand it does not follow the dictates of trends
and, on the other, it guarantees reliably high quality
products over many years. We have long known that
a “great” wine is born, first and foremost,
from a great vineyard.
We believe in our commitment and are rewarded by continual
commercial success amongst our customers, by the many
awards given to us at leading wine events and by our
continual presence in the most prestigious national
and international guides.
We produce an average of 5500 quintals of grapes
from which we obtain only 400,000 bottles, as we only
crush grapes that we produce. |
