100% Refosco dal peduncolo rosso grapes,
grown from ancient indigenous Friuli vines.
Location of the vineyard
Hills of the Tenuta Sottomonte in the municipality
of Buttrio (Udine), Colli Orientali del
Friuli D.O.C. zone. Hills and foothills
area, predominantly marly-clayey soil North-South
exposure.
Training system - yield per hectare
Doppio capovolto (double bending canes).
Area: 4.18 hectares.
Average production: 80 q/Ha, 55 hl/Ha.
Harvest period - vinification methods
Manual grape harvesting, first week in October.
Red wine vinification with prolonged period
of maceration on the skins and must (18
days). Slight pressing of the grapes and
controlled temperature fermentation (26°C)
to encourage the development of varietal
aromas.
Maturation and ageing
In steel tanks until bottling and thereafter
in the bottle, stocked horizontally in the
underground cellars for at least four weeks
prior to labelling.
Longevity
Over six years.
Sensory characteristics
Intense ruby red colour with violet hues.
The bouquet is rich and complex, with fruity
hints of plums, violets and wild berries.
A well-balanced and pleasing wine, the flavour
treats the palate to hints of liquorice,
blackberry marmalade and the characteristic
smokiness. Soft tannins support the persistent
aftertaste. It has remarkable freshness
and strong tannins ensure the wines longevity.
Food and wine pairings
Excellent wine with seafood pasta and risotto
specialities. The ideal
accompaniment to red or white meat dishes
and with flavourful fish. Sublime with escargots
and frogs’ legs.
Service
This wine is best served at room temperature
(18°C) to fully appreciate all of its
sensory characteristics.
